Energy Loss and Medium Response via Two Particle Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

چکیده
In these proceedings, pair correlations between high pT finalstate particles in central and mid-central Au+Au are presented as a function of trigger-angle with respect to the reaction plane. Jet tomography results like these add another dimension of experimental discrimination to energy loss calculations and initial state geometric descriptions. The observed increasing away-side suppression with respect to the nuclear overlap demonstrate that back-to-back production at high pT in mid-central collisions is not dominated by unmodified production produced tangentially to the nuclear overlap. Furthermore, these results present a challenge to theories that predict only a weak variation due to angle with respect to the reaction plane.

Two- and three-particle azimuthal correlations of high-pt charged hadrons in Pb-Au collisions at 158A GeV beam energy
Energy loss of partons traversing the hot and dense medium in a heavy ion collision can have significant impact on the shape of jets emerging from such collisions. These shapes can be analyzed via azimuthal correlations of a high-pt trigger particle (T) and associated particles (A) in an event. Correlation functions (CF) C2(∆φ) of the difference in the azimuthal angle ∆φ = φT − φA are construct...
متن کاملEnergy and System-size Dependence of Two-particle Azimuthal Correlations of High-pT Charged Hadrons at the CERN SPS
Angular correlations of high-pT hadrons can serve as a probe of interactions of partons with the dense medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions but other sources of such correlations exist which can be non-negligible SPS energies. In an attempt to determine the primary source, NA49 has performed an energy and system-size scan of two-particle azimuthal correlations in central Pb+Pb, S...
متن کاملElucidating Jet Energy Loss in Heavy Ion Collisions
Over the last eight years, the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has been providing heavy ion collisions in the attempt to create the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) within the laboratory. Some of the most striking data from the first few years at RHIC were results from the apparent interaction of hard scattered partons in the medium produced at RHIC. Singl...
متن کاملModeling Magnetic Field in Heavy ion Collisions Using Two Different Nuclear Charge Density Distributions
By studying the properties of matter during heavy-ion collisions, a better understanding of the Quark-Gluon plasma is possible. One of the main areas of this study is the calculation of the magnetic field, particularly how the values of conductivity affects this field and how the field strength changes with proper time. In matching the theoretical calculations with results obtained in lab, two diffe...
متن کاملHeavy Flavor Production and Energy Loss with Two-Particle Correlations at PHENIX
Heavy quarks are a valuable probe of the hot, dense medium created in a heavy ion collision, and are an important test of proposed mechanisms of energy loss. It was discovered that single non-photonic electrons are suppressed at a similar level to light hadrons, implying a comparable level of energy loss between light and heavy partons. Because theory has had a difficult time explaining the lev...
